Surf in Newport Beach

Reflections on a day of surfing in Newport Beach, Feb. 14, 2019. Words and photos by Paul Bivens (@paulbivens_imagery).

From the top, palm trees stood tall against the intense winds. Dark, massive storm clouds controlled the sky, the sun peaking though as hard as it could. Waves pounded the shoreline, surfers glided beyond the tree line.

Down below, an angry tide raged. Water spilled over the rocks, piles of kelp scattered the coastline. The wind was so loud, it was all you could hear. Set after set rolled in, much to the delight of a small group of determined surfers.

Even from above, you could feel the energy in the water and sense the pure stoke in the air.
