Yesterday afternoon, Newport Beach locals gathered by Newport Pier for a two-hour Blackies Beach Cleanup. “We love being part of a community that cares about clean beaches,” read an Instagram post by Malarky’s Irish Pub.
The cleanup was put together by No Beach Plastic, The Board Club, Malarky’s Irish Pub, Surf Shop Box and Pacific Marine Mammal Center. Here’s a little more about the event organizers:
No Beach Plastic is a local group dedicated to keeping plastic waste off the beaches and out of the ocean. The initiative provides alternatives to single-use plastic bottles, provides local access to drinking water and raises awareness among the community about the harmful effects of plastic waste.
The Board Club is a Newport Beach surf club that offers members unlimited access and exchanges to a wide variety of high-quality surfboards created by established shapers throughout California. Membership to the club includes networking opportunities, surfboard design lessons, surf coaching, fitness training, special discounts to local businesses and more.
Malarky’s Irish Pub is a local favorite for brunch, affordable dinners and of course, a weekend night out on the town. If you haven’t spent a Friday or Saturday night at Malarky’s, you haven’t truly experienced Balboa Peninsula nightlife.

Pacific Mammal Center is the only mammal rescue center in Orange County. According to the organization’s mission statement, “the Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues, rehabilitates and releases marine mammals and inspires ocean stewardship through research, education and collaboration.” Representatives from the Center were on hand yesterday, passing out flyers, magnets and keychains to spread the word and motivate locals to help save the lives of mammals that swim beneath the water.
In true Newport Beach style, the cleanup was followed by an afterparty at Malarky’s, which included food, drink specials and a raffle.
