Newport Beach Film Festival Hosts Free Screening of Art Film

Some might think the Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF) is much like the holidays; it comes around once every year with all its fanfare and festive glory then disappears into the ethereal unknown. Except NBFF is actually a year-round celebration of cinema; the team works hard every day to fill our local screens with artsy, edgy and thought-provoking films.

Take, for instance, the upcoming O.C. debut of Leaning into the Wind – Andy Goldsworthy, which will be shown Nov. 3 in conjunction with the Laguna Beach Art Museum as part of the museum’s Art & Nature festival. The festival, happening Nov. 1-4, is an interactive community event featuring special exhibitions, a commissioned outdoor work of art by artist Elizabeth Turk, lectures, panel discussions, films and family activities on the theme of art’s engagement with the natural world. (Discover more about the Art & Nature festival here.)

NBFF’s screening of Leaning into the Wind – Andy Goldsworthy is free with museum admission and will take place Saturday, Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. All seats are first come, first serve.

The 97-minute German documentary follows Goldsworthy, a British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist best known for outdoor pieces that use an array of natural materials like snow, ice, grass, leaves, stones and twigs. Leaning into the Wind – Andy Goldsworthy focuses on the contemporary artist’s exploration of the layers of his world and the impact years of life experience have had on his being, his soul and his work. As Goldsworthy introduces his own body into the pieces he creates, they become simultaneously more fragile and personal and also sterner and tougher, as he begins incorporating massive machinery and crews into his larger projects. Director Thomas Riedelsheimer’s exquisite film illuminates Goldsworthy’s mind as it reveals his art.
